Abu Sama III (born May 27, 2005)[1] is an American football running back for the Iowa State Cyclones.[2]

Early life and high school

Sama grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and attended Southeast Polk High School. In his high school career, Sama made 31 carries for 190 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 63.3 yards per game. He also received two receptions for 21 yards[3] and was named the Iowa Gatorade Football Player of the Year during his senior season.[4] He was ranked a three-star rated recruit and committed to play college football at Iowa State University[5] over offers from Arkansas State, Eastern Michigan, Kansas State, Kent State, Missouri State, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Southern Illinois.[6]

College career

During Sama's true freshman season in 2023, he played in 11 games and finished the season with 72 rushing attempts for 610 yards, six touchdowns and seven receptions, averaging 8.5 rushing yards per game.[7] During the game against Kansas State, Sama made his first career start while running for 276 yards and three touchdowns which were the most made by a freshman in school history. Because of his performance, he was named the Big 12 Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Week.[8][9]
