The 2024 MLS SuperDraft will be the 25th edition of the MLS SuperDraft, a sports draft to select amateur, usually collegiate, soccer players that are not affiliate with an MLS club, or college soccer players that had their Homegrown player rights relinquished by their parent MLS club. The draft will be held on December 19, 2023, marking the second year in a row that the draft will be held in December. Despite the draft being held in 2023, the draft will retain 2024 branding.[1]

Ahead of the 2024 draft MLS has expanded the player eligibility criteria for the SuperDraft. For the first time in league history, collegiate sophomores and juniors, alongside seniors and above, and Generation adidas signees in the selection pool will be eligible for the draft, similar to eligibility in the Major League Baseball draft.[2] Drafted players retaining college eligibility can opt to return to school for further development but will forfeit future draft eligibility. The drafting club retains SuperDraft Priority for approximately two years if a selected player chooses to return to college or remains unsigned.[1][3]

Format

Historically, the MLS SuperDraft has closely resembled that of the NFL Draft:

  1. Any expansion teams receive the first picks. This season, no new expansion teams will be entering MLS.
  2. Non-playoff clubs receive the next picks in reverse order of prior season finish.
  3. Teams that made the MLS Cup Playoffs are then ordered by which round of the playoffs they are eliminated.
  4. The winners of the MLS Cup are given the last selection, and the losers the penultimate selection.
