The Embassy of the United States in Skopje is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in North Macedonia.
History
Macedonia achieved independence in 1991 with the peaceful breakup of Yugoslavia. Recognition was delayed due to Greece's objection to the use of "Macedonia" in the country's name, and it was initially recognized as the "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (FRYM). The United States recognized FRYM on February 9, 1994, under the provisional designation and began referring to the country by its constitutional name, the Republic of Macedonia, in 2004.[1][2] In February 2019, following the signing of the Prespa Agreement in June 2018, Macedonia's name was changed to the Republic of North Macedonia.[1]
The United States established a Liaison Office in Skopje on December 3, 1993, with Robert L. Norman serving as the Acting Principal Officer.[1][3] Diplomatic relations between the two countries were officially established on September 13, 1995, following correspondence between U.S. President Bill Clinton and Macedonian President Kiro Gligorov.[1][3] The first U.S. Ambassador to present his credentials to the Republic of Macedonia was Christopher R. Hill on July 29, 1996.[1][3]
The United States has been a strong supporter of North Macedonia’s aspirations for integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions and has committed to assisting the country in strengthening its rule of law, improving education, promoting media freedom, and fostering a full, inclusive multi-ethnic society.[2] American and European allies swiftly mediated the end to the 2001 insurgency in Macedonia, which arose from ethnic tensions in North Macedonia, and have supported efforts to forge a peaceful political solution to the crisis through the Ohrid Framework Agreement.[2]
In 2017, following the election of an ethnic Albanian as speaker, the embassy denounced the storming of the Parliament building by nationalist protesters.[4]
