From Middle Dutch tooch, from Old Dutch togen (“to show”), from Proto-West Germanic *taugijan or *ataugijan, from Proto-Germanic *at + *augijaną (“to display”), similar to Gothic 𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ataugjan, “to show”). Alternatively from Proto-Germanic *ta + *augijaną.
