From Proto-Germanic *þiustrijaz (“dark, without light”), probably from a pre-Indo-European substrate language. Cognate with Old English þīestre (“dark, gloomy”), Old Frisian thiustere, Middle Dutch duuster, Icelandic þjóstur (anger, bad temper) .
