Origin disputed. Ultimately either from Medieval Latin aestivālis (“summerly”), in place of Classical Latin aestīvus (whence also Sicilian stivu), from aestās (“summer”), or from tībiālis (“tibial, of the tibia”), from tībia. Compare Old French estival, Italian stivale.
