From Proto-Semai *pləbm, from Proto-Aslian *pələm (“land leech”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁ləm ~ *t₁lam ~ *t₁ləəm (“land leech”) via *t₁pləm. Cognate with Semnam plɔm, Bahnar plơm, Mon ကၠံ.
