From Latin lixīvia, variant of lixīva, noun use of the adjective lixīvus (“made into lye”), from the use aqua lixīva. Compare Portuguese lixívia, French lessive, Friulian lissie, Sardinian lissía and liscìa, Sicilian lisìa and liscìa, Spanish lejía, Romanian leșie.
