    Etymology
    
Derived from Middle High German kalbe, from Old High German chalbā, from Proto-Germanic *kalbǭ (“heifer”), the feminine equivalent of *kalbaz (“calf”). Cognate with dialectal German Kalbele, Alemannic German Kalbala, Kalbla.[1]
