Ultimately from Proto-Finno-Permic *jakša, whence Erzya якшамо (jakšamo) and Moksha якшама (jakšama, “cold, frost”). This root can be seen in Proto-Finnic *jahtudak (“to cool down”) (with the suffix *-tudak (modern Estonian -tuma)), whence modern Estonian jahtuma.
