From *ǵh₂r-, zero grade of Proto-Indo-European *ǵeh₂r- (“to shout, call”).
Cognate with Ancient Greek γῆρυς (gêrus, “voice, speech”), Khotanese [script needed] (ysār-, “to sing”), Latin garriō (“chatter”), Old English caru (“sorrow”).
