Obscure. Either related to French gaspiller (“to waste”), from Old French gaspail (“bullet of wheat”), or to Spanish caspa (“fragment”).[1] In the first case, from Proto-Germanic *wisp- (“measure of grain”) or from Proto-Germanic *gaspilþijaną (“to destroy, waste”), from Proto-Indo-European *spel- (“to break off, split”).
