Etymology
Probably from unattested Old Irish *gartiugud (“passing time, shortening time”), a derivative of garait (“short”) (cf. goirid). Later reanalyzed as a derivative of gàir (“laugh”). Cognate with Irish gáirdeachas. Possibly related to aighear (“delight, joy, merriment”).
