From Old Irish fían, from Proto-Celtic *wēnā (“band of warriors”), from Proto-Indo-European *weyh₁- (“to chase, pursue”). Cognate with Latin vēnor (“I hunt”), Old English wynn (“joy, desire”) and Old Norse vinr (“friend”).
