From New Latin anergia, from Ancient Greek ἀν- (an-, “not, without”) + ἔργον (érgon, “work”).

anergy (countable and uncountable, plural anergies)

1. (physics) Dilute or disorganized energy, which cannot be transformed into work.
   • 2002, J. Honerkamp, Statistical Physics, page 298:

     The maximum fraction of an energy form which (in a reversible process) can be transformed into work is called exergy. The remaining part is called anergy, and this corresponds to the waste heat.

2. (pathology) Deficiency of energy.
3. (immunology) Lack of immunity to an antigen.
