   De oorzaken van botbreuken zijn onder te verdelen in twee grote categorieën. Enerzijds ten gevolge van grote externe krachten (bijvoorbeeld ongeval) die op het bot uitgeoefend worden en waartegen het bot niet bestand is. Anderzijds kan er een pathologie van het bot aanwezig zijn waardoor het bot zo broos wordt dat het breekt onder invloed van normale krachten zoals wandelen en rechtstaan (bijvoorbeeld bij osteoporose, botmetastase).

   The causes of bone fractures are to be classified under two great categories. On the one side as a consequence of great external forces (for example an accident) that are exerted upon the bone and against which the bone is unable to withstand. On the other hand there can be present a pathology of the bone through which the bone becomes so fragile that it breaks under the influence of normal forces such as walking and standing up (for example due to osteoporosis, bone metastasis).
