Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Latin anatomia, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀνατομία (anatomía), a word attested only once, in a quotation in a Latin text by Caelius Aurelianus, from ἀνατέμνω (anatémnō, “I cut up”), from ἀνά (aná, “up”) and τέμνω (témnō, “I cut”).
