From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rwak (“leaf”), with a prefix a³¹- added. Cognate with Burmese အရွက် (a.rwak, “leaf”) and Japhug tɤjwaʁ. Compare Lhao Vo afo', Zaiwa ahaq, Longchuan Achang a³¹xʐoʔ⁵⁵ and Hpon ăʀùʔ.
