    Etymology
    
From a few placenames in England, of unknown origin. However, compare the obsolete verb toom (“to empty, free up”). Another theory connects it to a contraction of Saint Omer in France, for which see French Omer.

- According to the 2010 United States Census, Toomer is the 10491st most common surname in the United States, belonging to 3059 individuals. Toomer is most common among Black/African American (66.26%) and White (28.11%) individuals.
