- (dated) A paraphyletic group, consisting of jawed vertebrates that includes the Tetrapoda, Osteichthyes (bony fish, now thought descended from placoderms), and the wholly extinct Acanthodii fishes, but excludes Chondrichthyes (rays, sharks, etc), now thought to share ancestry with the †Acanthodii.
