From Middle High German senkel (“net weighed down with lead balls, anchor, lace”), from Old High German senkil (“anchor, cast net”), from an extension of senken with nominalizing suffix -ila, originally meaning "device that one lets sink down"; see Stachel for an analogous noun formation.
