Etymology
From *čalpa- (“to muddle”) + *-mur (cf. *čalpaŋ (“mud”), *čalpak (“filth”)). Became *čamur due to the simplification of the consonant cluster *-lpm-.
Doerfer instead suggests a derivation from *čam-, an unattested earlier version of *čom- (“to sink”).[1]
