Proto-Italic

    Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷelh₁éh₂yeti, *gʷelH- (“throw”). De Vaan explains the semantic shift by taking the original meaning of *gʷelH- as "to raise the arm", which then shifted to "to fly".[1]
