Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Of disputed origin.
- Possibly borrowed from another language, but which source is correct is not certain:
- Proto-Baltic *talˀa-; compare Old Prussian talas and the latter component of Lithuanian pãtalas.
- Proto-Indo-Iranian *tálas; compare Sanskrit तल (tala).
- Proto-Germanic *stallaz; compare Old Norse stallr, English stall (the least likely due to **-ll- being expected, not *-l-)
- Alternatively from Proto-Finno-Permic *tala. Compare Udmurt тылыс (tylys, “a simple wooden hut, hovel”).
In any of these cases, the stem *tala(s)- was then further derived with + *-oi.
