Proto-Finnic
Etymology
From earlier *šaina, borrowed from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śaina-. Compare Lithuanian šienas, Proto-Slavic *sěno. The descendants that split later than Livonian and Võro use the form *heinä instead, with a later sporadic raising *ai > *ei (compare *kaihas, *laipa, *saibas, *saina).
