Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Unknown. Likely from earlier *šülkeš and often compared with Proto-Germanic *selhaz (“seal”), as a loan in either direction or from a common third, perhaps substrate, source. According to Nirvi (1944), from *hülgäit'äk + *-ëh.
