Proto-Celtic

    Etymology

Uncertain. Maybe a derivative of the nasal present Proto-Indo-European *kl̥-né-h₂-ti ~ *kl̥-n-h₂-énti (“to beat”) of Proto-Indo-European *kelh₂-.[1] Other suggestions include from *(s)kelH- (“to cut”), whence Proto-Germanic *skiljaną (“to cut”),[2] or from *kel- (“to drive”), whence Latin callis (“path”).[3]
