Proto-Celtic
Etymology
According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰers- (“to bristle”), but Matasović dismisses this as "improbable," instead calling it an "expressive" development of Proto-Indo-European *ǵ-ʰr-wo- related to *gargos (“rough, fierce”).
