From Middle High German kupfe, from Old High German kupfa (“cap, bonnet”), probably from Late Latin cuppa (“cup”). The modern consonantism is Central and Low German; compare Middle Low German koppe. Cognate with Dutch kop (“cup; head”), English cup. Related also with Kopf (“head”).
