From Middle High German humbel, hummel, from Old High German humbal, humbala, humbalo. Cognate with Dutch hommel, Danish humlebi, Swedish humla. Eventually probably onomatopoeic and related with English hum.
Compare English bumblebee, which has Middle English bombeln ("to buzz") as its first element.
