Learned borrowing from Sumerian 𒀭𒉎𒂂𒄷 (AN.IM.DUGUDMUŠEN /Anzû/, “a mythical dragon-like bird”), origin unknown, perhaps from 𒀭 (An, “heaven”) + 𒍪 (zu, “to know”).
