From 눈 (nun, “eye”) + 에 (-e, locative marker) + ㅅ (-s-, genitive marker) + 가시 (gasi, “thorn”), literally: "a thorn in the eye". Compare a similar expression in Chinese 眼中釘,肉中刺/眼中钉,肉中刺 (yǎnzhōngdīng, ròuzhōngcì, “a nail in the eye, a thorn in the flesh”).
