Etymology
    
Ultimately from Middle Chinese compound 殲滅 (MC tsjem mjiet, literally “annihilate + destroy”), probably as a learned borrowing from Chinese 殲滅/歼灭 (jiānmiè).
First cited to a text from 1825.[1]
