Shortened from Pali vinicchaya, from Sanskrit विनिश्चय (viniścaya), whence ពិនិស្ច័យ (pinɨhcay) is derived. Cognate with Thai พินิจ (pí-nít), วินิจฉัย (wí-nít-chǎi).
