Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Persian شهر (šahr), from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭲𐭥𐭩 (štry /šahr/, “land”), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *xšaθram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšatrám (“dominion”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tk-e-tróm (“taken (land)”). Doublet of শাহ (śah), খাতা (khata), ক্ষত্র (khotro), and ক্ষত্রিয় (khotriẏo). Cognate with Assamese চহৰ (sohor), Gujarati શહેર (śaher), Hindustani شہر / शहर (śahar), Marathi शहर (śahar), Nepali शहर (śahar), Punjabi ਸ਼ਹਿਰ (śahir).
