Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀸𑀦 (*paṭṭhāna), from earlier *𑀧𑀱𑁆𑀝𑀸𑀦 (*paṣṭāna), from Eastern Old Iranian *Parštāna. Cognate with Odia ପଠାଣ (pôṭhaṇô), Maithili पठान (paṭhān), Gujarati પઠાણ (paṭhāṇ), Hindustani پَٹھان (paṭhān) / पठान (paṭhān), Nepali पठान (paṭhān), Punjabi ਪਠਾਣ (paṭhāṇ), Sindhi پَٺاڻُ (paṭhāṇu), Marathi पठाण (paṭhāṇ).
