From Aramaic שְׁבָט (šəḇāṭ), from Akkadian 𒌚𒀾 (Šabāṭum, literally “month of wheat (i.e. the start of harvest season)”); compare Turoyo ܐܷܫܘܷܛ (ëšwëṭ), also borrowed into Hebrew שְׁבָט (sh'vát, “Shevat”) and Arabic شُبَاط (šubāṭ, “February”).
