From the root ܕ-ܡ-ܐ (d-m-ʾ); ultimately from Proto-Semitic *dam- (“blood; by extension blood price, compensation for wrongful slaying”). Compare Akkadian 𒁕𒈬 (/damu/, “blood price, monetary compensation”, literally “blood”) and Hebrew דָּמִים (dāmīm).
