From Classical Syriac, from Biblical Hebrew בַּעַל זְבוּב (baʿal zəḇûḇ), a partial calque of Akkadian [script needed] (bēl dabābi, “Lord of the speech”). Doublet of ܒܥܸܠܕܒ݂ܵܒ݂ܵܐ (bˁildḇāḇā, “enemy, foe”).
