From Proto-Turkic *tap- (“to find”).[1]

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (tap-, “to find”);[2] Kazakh табу (tabu), Kumyk тампакъ (tampaq, “to find”), Kyrgyz табуу (tabuu), Southern Altai табар (tabar), Karachay-Balkar табаргъа (tabarğa), Karaim тап-, Nogai табув (tabuv), Khakas табарға (tabarğa), Shor табарға, Tofa туъпар / туъфар, Tuvan тывар (tıvar), Turkish tapmak (“to find”).
