From Proto-Turkic *kar, *karɨ (“forearm”), commonly connected with Proto-Mongolic *gar (“hand”) or Proto-Tungusic *gara (“branch, bough”). Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (qarï), Kazakh қар (qar), Mongolian гар (gar), Evenki гара (gara).
