Diminutive of an earlier Proto-Slavic *bъdьňa + -е (-e, diminutive suffix). Possibly of substrate origin, akin to Latin butina (“bottle”), Ancient Greek πῡτῑ́νη (pūtī́nē, “flask”), possibly Proto-Germanic *puttaz (“pot”).
