History
Roman era
The ancient Roman city of Tifernum Mataurense which lies underneath the modern town became a municipium at the beginning of the 1st century BC. The town was built with a regular grid of orthogonal streets, the main cardo maximus passing the public thermal baths and ending at the forum which les beneath the ex-convent of Saint Catherine. Tifernum Mataurense grew particularly in the 1st and 3rd centuries AD with imperial financial support for many monumental buildings which include the paved street, the public thermal baths, the sumptuous domus and the remains of an important building in Via Madonna.
The large noble house (domus) built towards the end of the 1st century AD was excavated beginning in 2003, and is known as Domus del Mito. It has an area of approximately 1,000 m2 (11,000 sq ft) and 27 rooms, many decorated with well-preserved figurative mosaics.[3][4]
Post Roman era
There were two periods when there was a Roman Catholic Diocese of Sant'Angelo in Vado, although the Diocese has been suppressed since 1986.
