Périhane Chalabi Cochin (born on 28 May 1965 in Beirut) more commonly known as Péri Cochin, is a French TV host with Lebanese and Iraqi heritage. She left Lebanon for France in 1974 at the age of nine, at the start of the Lebanese civil war.
She runs the company Waww La Table,[1] which she co-founded in 2020.
Biography
Chalabi Cochin comes from families of transnational identities with a Shia background. Her father is the Iraqi businessman Talal Chalabi,[2] a brother of the banker and politician Ahmad Chalabi. The Chalabis descend from a Shia dynasty of merchants and bankers in Baghdad.[3] In 1960, Talal married Maha al-Khalil, the heiress of a feudal dynasty in Tyre, Southern Lebanon.[2] Maha's father Kazem al-Khalil was a doyen member of the Lebanese parliament, seven-time minister of the Lebanese government and right-wing militia-leader. Maha al-Khalil's mother Muzain was a daughter of Ibrahim Haydar, a Shi'ite leader from the Beqaa Valley and father-in-law of fellow feudal lord Adel Osseiran, who is considered by some people to be one of the founding fathers of the Lebanese Republic. Talal's brother Ahmad married Leila Osseiran, daughter of Adel Osseiran, in 1971.[4]
After attending boarding school and passing her baccalauréat at the age of 16, Péri enrolled at the École du Louvre, where she specialised in contemporary art. Finding these studies lacking in vitality, she decided to change. She went on to study architecture, obtaining her DESA diploma with a special mention from the jury.[5]
She had three children with the architect Guillaume Cochin: Théodore, Aristide and Hippolyte.[6] She also raised Maxime, her husband's son from a previous marriage.
On 17 May 2013, on Laurent Ruquier's show on Europe 1, she announced that she was pregnant with her fourth child (a daughter, Talma) with her new partner, for whom it would be the first child.[7]
She was godmother of Papillons blancs de Paris[8] for 15 years, an association that works in the interests of people with mental and cognitive disabilities and their families.[9]
Career
In 1991, she launched La Tarte aux Bonbons [10] with her sister-in-law. These candy gift products were an immediate success, with 2,500 points of sale in France, exports to twelve countries and a licence in the United States. In 1996, Péri began working with confectionery manufacturers to create new products and sign licences.
Her travels gave her the idea in 1997 of registering a patent [11] to prevent salt from clumping (sticking) when it's damp. At the same time, she designed and developed[5] the first line of indoor/outdoor furniture in exotic wood for a leading manufacturer.
