Hugh Richard O'Leary (born 19 July 1974) is a British accountant, who is married to Liz Truss, formerly Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from September to October 2022.[1]

Early life and education

A scion of a junior Carrignacurra branch of the Ó Laoghaire[2] of the ancient Corcu Loígde,[3] he was born at Allerton, Liverpool, the eldest son of John O'Leary and Susan née Dunn,[4] and grew up in Heswall on the Wirral. O'Leary's mother was a nurse, and his father became a college lecturer having qualified as a solicitor before working at the Liverpool legal firm Rex Makin.[5]

O'Leary attended Birkenhead School, where he studied Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A-level. After applying unsuccessfully to the University of Oxford to read PPE, he went up to read econometrics and mathematical economics at the London School of Economics graduating as BSc, before qualifying as a chartered accountant.[5] Whilst at university, he was acquainted with Thérèse Coffey, who was later Liz Truss's deputy prime minister.[6]

Career

O'Leary worked as a finance director at Affinity Global Real Estate.[7]

He previously worked at Arrakis Investments Limited, a company that, at the time, had no employees other than its one director.[8]

Politics

O'Leary has stood unsuccessfully for the Conservative Party in local elections for Greenwich London Borough Council on several occasions. At the 1998 council election, he was a candidate for the Labour-held St Alfege Ward.[9] At the subsequent council election in 2002, he stood in Greenwich West; all three seats were won by the Labour Party.[5][10][11]

His most recent candidacy to date was at the 2006 Greenwich election, this time for the Charlton Ward, when O'Leary and the other opposition parties finished a considerable margin behind the winning Labour candidates.[12] At this election, his wife Liz Truss was elected as Councillor for Eltham South Ward, which she represented until 2010.[13] O'Leary has remained active in politics as a member of the Conservatives, canvassing with the party in Greenwich in 2022.[14][7]

Personal life

O'Leary met Truss at the 1997 Conservative Party conference in Blackpool.[5][15] The couple's first date was spent ice-skating, during which O'Leary sprained his ankle.[5] O'Leary and Truss married in 2000, and have two daughters;[5] they divide their time between homes in Greenwich, London SE10, and the South West Norfolk constituency which Truss has represented since 2010.[7][16] O'Leary stood by Truss following her extramarital affair with former Conservative MP Mark Field.
