100Green, (Green Energy (UK) Ltd), is an independent sustainable energy company that provides 100% Ofgem-certified renewable electricity and green gas to homes, businesses and organizations across England, Wales and Scotland. 100Green is the only energy supplier in the UK to offer 100% green gas. The company was founded in 2001 by CEO Douglas Stewart and is located in Ware, Hertfordshire.[1]

Green Supplier Limited and Green Network Energy, which ceased trading in 2021,[2] are not to be confused with 100Green.

About

100Green was the first energy supplier to provide 100% green gas to domestic and business customers. They are still the only supplier who provides 100% green gas to domestic customers.

100Green has an Ofgem-awarded derogation from the price cap in recognition it incurs materially greater costs for all its tariffs as a result of its business model which is to provide materially greater support for investment in renewable electricity.[3]

They were the first private company in the UK to give free shares to its customers.[4] Whilst this scheme has now ended, some customers remain shareholders.

100Green's customer base has grown through customer recommendation, sponsorship and social-marketing activities.

Fuel mix

100Green was the first UK energy supplier to offer a choice of dual-fuel, 100% green and renewable tariffs. All their tariffs are made up of 100% green sources – solar, wind, hydro and biomass and biomethane (green gas).

The EKO Tariff offered by 100Green is independently certified by EKOenergy a global, non-profit ecolabel for renewable energy. The ecolabel proves that the consumed energy fulfils extra sustainability and quality criteria, set by a network of environmental NGOs. Using the ecolabel also helps consumers make a concrete and additional impact through the EKOenergy Climate Fund and Environmental Fund.

100Green launched the UK's first time-of-use tariff, TIDE in January 2017. Tide encourages customers to vary usage and consume electricity in periods of lower demand when the price is cheaper using an electricity smart meter.[5]

Generators

Only a few of 100Green's 650 generators were making electricity before 100Green was set up. The company's generators are all approved by Ofgem and have a large range of sources including energy from waste, biomass, photovoltaic-solar, small-scale hydro, wind, CHP and anaerobic digestion.[6]

All gas supplied by 100Green has been certified by the Green Gas Certification Scheme.

The company only buys renewable electricity and green-sourced gas from within the UK and has no brown energy or nuclear in its business.

Awards

100Green were awarded the Which? Eco Provider badge, 2021, 2022 and 2023 [7]

100Green was ranked No.1 'Best Buy' by Ethical Consumer Magazine, 2021 and continues to be ranked a top 'Best Buy' in 2023-2024[8]

100Green tops the Good Shopping Guide ratings table of ethical energy suppliers as of 2023, being just one of two suppliers to achieve the full ethical accreditation in 2023.

100Green was crowned 'Winner of Winners' in the Cisco Customer Kings competition, 2010.[9]
