Eric Sim (born 1969)[1] is a Singaporean author, lecturer, financial investor and the founder of the Institute of Life.[1][2][3] He formerly served as managing director at UBS Investment Bank and adjunct associate professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.[4] Previously based in Hong Kong,[5] Sim writes about career skills for professionals on social media.[1][6]
Early life and education
Sim was born in Singapore and grew up in a low income-family with near-illiterate parents.[1][7] His father was a street food vendor selling prawn noodle in Singapore hawker center.[4] Sim did not do well in his high school where he failed his English and literature.[8][4] He was also weak in sports.[9] Sim attended the National University of Singapore where he completed a Bachelor of Engineering in 1994. Sim graduated from Lancaster University with a Master of Science in Finance in 1997.[10] He was rejected by Princeton University to do his PhD in 2000.[11][12]
Career
Sim started with banking career with DBS Bank in Singapore and had worked for Standard Chartered Bank and Citi in Shanghai and Hong Kong before joining UBS Investment Bank.[13][14]
In his banking career, he had been involved with derivatives, structured finance, and investment banking.[15]
Sim is the chief trainer at Institute of Life.[16]
In 2019, Sim is a guest lecturer at Queen's University at Kingston[17][18] and speaks at conferences including TEDx.[19][17]
Sim is also the author of Small Actions: Leading Your Career to Big Success published by World Scientific Publishing.[20][21]
The book was nominated for Business Book Awards 2022 in London for the category “Business Journey”.[22]
It was translated into Chinese and published by Posts & Telecommunications Press.[2]
In 2020, he was on LinkedIn's lists for its content creators, LinkedIn Top Voices for Singapore and LinkedIn Spotlight for China.[23][24]
In 2022, he was named by LinkedIn as one of 11 global Finfluencers.[25]
