Dr. Naresh Chandra Murmu is the current director of CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute Durgapur[1][2] and CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur.[3]

Education

He received his B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Calcutta University, Calcutta in 1992, M.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 1994 and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, India in 2010.

Career

He began working as a scientist at CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur in 2003. Prior to this, he worked as a scientist in CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore.

He worked as a visiting scientist at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany from 2001 to 2003, and at Northwestern University, United States from 2011 to 2012.

He is a receipt of VASVIK Award (Mechanical & Strcutural Sciences & Technology) 2015, National Design Award (Mechanical Engineering) NDRF (2012), CSIR-Raman Research Fellowship (2012), DAAD fellowship -2000.

Murmu has published over 100 research papers in journals and conferences, 4 book chapters[4][5] and has filed 5 patents & 8 copyrights/design registration.[2]

He is currently Associate Editor, Journal of the Institute of Engineers (India) Series –C[6] and Co-Guest edited the Special Theme (2017): India's Reusable Launch Vehicle Technology Demonstrator: The Future of Space Transportation System with Shri Sivan, K., chairman, ISRO.[7]

Research

Murmu's current research interests include Additive and Smart Manufacturing, Graphene Composite, Ink & Lubricants and graphene ultracapacitor.

Some of his notable contributions includes development and co-development of 5 Axis Micro-Milling Machine (demonstrated milling 100μm feature), Graphene Super-Capacitor (~113W/Kg at device level), Foil Bearing ( demonstrated at 30,000rpm), EHD-Ink Jet Printing, Graphene Lubricant (cof ~0.01) for hot forging and Miniature Turbine (demonstrated @2.73 Lakh rpm).[4][2][8]
