The Northeast Transportation Company (sometimes written as North East Transportation, abbreviated as NET) is a bus operator based in the Naugatuck Valley area of Connecticut. NET currently serves as a contractor under CT Transit providing local bus and paratransit services in Meriden, Wallingford, and Waterbury.

History

The Northeast Transportation Company began in 1925 as a merger of multiple existing jitney operators in Waterbury. After CR&L's surrender of its bus operations in 1973, Northeast Transportation existed as the only bus operator in its service area.[1]

Waterbury, Meriden and Wallingford Operations

Since the integration of the Connecticut Department of Transportation's bus services into CT Transit in 2008, NET has operated CT Transit routes in Waterbury, Meriden, and Wallingford as part of the eponymous CT Transit Waterbury, Meriden and Wallingford Division.

Meriden

In 1980, NET took over operation of Meriden's bus routes from State of Connecticut using buses leased from New Britain Transportation.[2][3] The municipal Meriden Transit District oversees NET's operations in the city. During the 1990s the Connecticut Department of Transportation began to integrate the Meriden Transit District's three routes into the CT Transit network,[4] fully adopting CT Transit branding and buses in 1997.[5] Until 2008, these routes remained somewhat separate from others in CT Transit, for example offering discounted fare cards exclusively for Meriden routes which could only be purchased at specific locations.[6]
