The Chawk Mosque is a notable landmark of Chowkbazar Thana.[1]

Chowkbazar (Bengali: চকবাজার), also called Chawkbazar Model Thana, is a Thana of Dhaka District in the Division of Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was formed in August 2009 from parts of Lalbagh Thana and Kotwali Thana, and has an area of 2.07 km2.[2] It includes the Chowk Bazaar and was the site of the February 2019 Dhaka fire.

History

The area of Chowkbazar Thana was originally part of the Mughal capital of Dhaka. In the 17th century, the Mughals built the Chawk Mosque and the Lalbagh Fort. The area developed into a commercial hub during the British colonial era. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, Chowkbazar Thana was formed in 2009.

Economy

Chowkbazar Thana is a major commercial hub of Dhaka. The area is home to a large number of businesses, including banks, shops, restaurants, and hotels. Chowkbazar Bazaar is one of the largest and most popular markets in Dhaka.

Transportation

Chowkbazar Thana is well connected to the rest of Dhaka by road and rail. The thana is served by a number of public buses, CNG rickshaws, and auto-rickshaws. The Dhaka Metro Rail also has a station in the thana.
